"Dandruff" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. These are the three conditions most flakes trace back to, and each one needs a different treatment.
Malassezia globosa
A yeast that lives on every human scalp. It feeds on scalp oils and produces oleic acid, which irritates sensitive scalps, speeding up skin-cell turnover. Those excess cells clump into the white flakes you see.
Seborrheic dermatitis
Dandruff’s angrier sibling: red, inflamed, greasy patches with stubborn yellowish scales, often along the hairline, eyebrows or behind the ears. Ordinary shampoos barely touch it.
Dry-scalp flaking
